 Simple Protection Prayers

1.  A thanksgiving exclamation of protection:  "Thank you Father for being my Protector and Provider."  A daily prayer.

2.  A daily ritual of protection: "I sign (myself or other name) with the sign of the cross, seal and cover (myself or them) with the blood of Jesus and surround (myself or them) with God's glory light and presence so nothing can get through to hurt them in Jesus' name. Amen."  (Learned from Agnes Sanford.)

3.  Daily ritual prayer of protection - long version: "In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, I sign myself with the sign of the cross.

I remember that I am sealed into the New Covenant by the blood of the lamb of God (Jesus Christ) that takes away the sins of the world and I cover myself with the Blood of the lamb.

I asked to be filled and protected with the glory light of heaven and to radiate God's light and God love to all that I meet this day and in all that I do."  (This can be done with hand motions of the cross on the forehead, a sweep over the head and a sweep around the body.)

I am careful to focus on God and not change my focus onto darkness.  There is a danger of unsafe prayer - of prayer that binds us to Satan and allows his access to us.  I avoid that unsafe prayer.

Celtic style prayers for protection

The light of God surrounds you,
The love of God enfolds you,
The power of God protects you,
And the presence of God watches over you;
Wherever you are, God is.

(From prayer of protection)

 Be God with Me (Celtic)

Be the eye of God betwixt me and each eye,
The purpose of God betwixt me and each purpose,
The hand of God betwixt me and each hand,
The shield of God betwixt me and each shield,
The desire of God betwixt me and each desire,
The bridle of God betwixt me and each bridle,
And no mouth can curse me.

Against the Powers of Darkness (St. Patrick)

On Terra (earth) in this fateful hour
I place all Heaven with its power
the sun with its brightness
the snow with its whiteness
the fire with all the strength it hath
the lightning with its rapid wrath
the winds with their swiftness along their path
the sea with its deepness
the rocks with their steepness
the earth with it starkness
all these I place
With God's almighty help and grace
between myself and the powers of darkness.

Notice that even in this  prayer against darkness the powers of darkness follow only after 12 lines of the manifestation of God are invoked.  The same principle is seen in The Breastplate of St. Patrick:

The Breastplate of St. Patrick

I arise today through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity,
through belief in the Threeness, through confession of the Oneness of the Creator of creation.

I arise today through the strength of Christ with His Baptism,
through the strength of His Crucifixion with His Burial
through the strength of His Resurrection with His Ascension,
through the strength of His descent for the Judgment of Doom.

I arise today through the strength of the love of Cherubim
in obedience of Angels, in the service of the Archangels,
in hope of resurrection to meet with reward,
in prayers of Patriarchs, in predictions of Prophets,
in preachings of Apostles, in faiths of Confessors,
in innocence of Holy Virgins, in deeds of righteous men.

I arise today, through the strength of Heaven:
light of Sun, brilliance of Moon, splendour of Fire,
speed of Lightning, swiftness of Wind, depth of Sea,
stability of Earth, firmness of Rock.

I arise today, through God's strength to pilot me:
God's might to uphold me, God's wisdom to guide me,
God's eye to look before me, God's ear to hear me,
God's word to speak for me, God's hand to guard me,
God's way to lie before me, God's shield to protect me,
God's host to secure me:
against snares of devils, against temptations of vices,
against inclinations of nature, against everyone who
shall wish me ill, afar and anear, alone and in a crowd.

I summon today all these powers between me (and these evils):
against every cruel and merciless power that may oppose my body and my soul,
against incantations of false prophets,
against black laws of heathenry,
against false laws of heretics, against craft of idolatry,
against spells of witches and smiths and wizards,
against every knowledge that endangers man's body and soul.
Christ to protect me today
against poison, against burning, against drowning,
against wounding, so that there may come abundance of reward.

Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me, Christ in me,
Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ on my right,
Christ on my left, Christ in breadth, Christ in length,
Christ in height, Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of every man who speaks of me,
Christ in every eye that sees me, Christ in every ear that hears me.

I arise today through a mighty strength, the invocation of the
Trinity, through belief in the Threeness, through confession of the
Oneness of the Creator of creation.
Salvation is of the Lord. Salvation is of the Lord.
Salvation is of Christ. May Thy Salvation, O Lord, be ever with us.

Protection by invoking Christ (Celtic protection prayer)

Christ before me
Christ within me
Christ above me
Christ below me
Christ behind me
Christ to the right of me
Christ to the left of me

Celtic prayer for invoking Yeshua (Jesus) the Christ

LogosChrist as a light, Illumine and guide me!

Christ as a shield, o'ershadow and cover me!

Yeshua be under me! Yeshua be over me!

Lord, be beside me, On the left hand and right!

God be before me, behind me, about me;

This day, be thou within and without me!

Celtic Prayer for Protection

Be the eye of God dwelling with you,

The foot of Christ in guidance with you,

The shower of the Spirit pouring on you,

Richly and generously.

God's peace be to you,

Jesus' peace be to you,

Spirit's peace be to you

And to your children,

Oh to you and to your children,

Each day and night

Of your portion in the world.

I am a professional counselor, 35 years a born-again Christian, 25 years in independent private practice with a focus on prayer therapy.  My mentors (Leanne Payne, John and Paula Sandford, Dr. Ed Smith, Agnes Sanford, John Paul Jackson) showed me protection prayers that are safe and effective.

Various mentors have taught me to avoid unhealthy forms of prayer.  Agnes Sanford always wanted positive language and imagery and not to focus energy on the problem.  Leanne Payne observed that spiritual attack is increased if one "binds" principalities and powers.  John Paul Jackson elaborates on the damage that echoes from misuse of authority. These teachings are important because of the evidence is that unhealthy protection prayer and unwise spiritual warfare leads to loss of protection and other effects that that feel very similar to living under a curse.  See: Spiritual Warfare in Everyday Life.

Unsafe Prayers to avoid so as not to undermine God's Protection

When you pray for protection let your language and images to be positive and focused on God.

I strongly warn against "address the enemy" by "binding" Satan or territorial spirits.  (Leave that to Michael and the Lord of Hosts who can call upon legions of angels.)  Do NOT bind Satan.  Do NOT bind territorial spirits - for example, the spirit of abortion over our city.

Your words call (invoke) what you name.  When you think you are binding demons and Satan you are only effective in calling them to you.  Therefore, avoid naming Satan, binding Satan, naming demons or binding demons when praying for protection. Do NOT focus prayer on Satan, demons, darkness.  Do focus on God.

To avoid focus on darkness and evil do not make a big list of sins and spirits that you don't want around.  (Ephesians 4:8)  Focus on what you do want.  Rather than cursing the darkness invite the light.  Do NOT name the spirits that you do not want around.  Better to call on the spirits you DO want around.  Focus positive not negative.

In your protection prayers do NOT command, demand or bind.  Do NOT command angels: let the Lord of Hosts do that.  Do NOT bind principalities or the devil; this initiates immediate and dangerous counter-attack.

Do NOT pray or rail against (yell at rudely and loudly) Satan (Jude 8-10).  You lose protection this way!  You enter into poverty this way.  It will be just like you were cursed!  Do NOT pray against Satan.

In order to remain positive, learn the discipline of keeping your focus on God and His Kingdom.  Deliverance from evil follows.  Praise and worship invokes God and brings down the necessary anointing.  For more about this topic see: spiritual warfare.

Jesus starts the Lord's Prayer with "The Kingdom come."  Follow His example and invite the presence of God.  If I discern evil, I choose to draw near to God by praising God.  I speak Biblical affirmations about God.  I put the enemy on intentional ignore.

If you do not ignore the enemy, if you chose to "bind" Satan and "bind" territorial spirits, if you choose to engage the enemy then you will lose God's protection.  You will engage the enemy.  You will lose the Christian's safe position of being hidden in Christ.

If you do not listen to this wisdom then the devil will rob you of your finances and steal your health; your relationships will become unhealthy.  Give him a change and the enemy begins to kill you with the hopes of totally destroying you.

You chose this when you chose to focus on and 'pray against' evil.  You invoked evil.  You are experiencing the consequences of your sin. You are undoing your prayers of protection.
