Intercessory Prayer by Dutch Sheets, Gospel Light, 1997

Review by Sharon Knoop - Mississauga video editor, 2009

A few years ago, I was introduced to this book by Dutch Sheets on the significance of praying. Intrigued by the title - Intercessory Prayer, I was expecting a step by step program of praying for and on behalf of others. However, Dutch's book goes much much further then that.

A comprehensive and wise book is Intercessory Prayer, filled with compassion and gentle teachings that flow off the page. I will admit to being the kind of person that see's any kind of theological book as 'reading through mud' (and many books earn that honor.)

Then again, Intercessory Prayer is more then just theology. It is a practical and insightful discussion on prayer that is inspiring and encouraging, urging the reader to take their prayer life - into LIFE. Through personal stories, and spiritual insight the reader is not turned off by lengthy scripture references or over sentimental emotionalism. Rather - Dutch has a way of being frank and open about the human folly of a busy mind and wounded soul that can distract one from having a pure honest conversation with the "God who hears us".

Not only a great read, Intercessory Prayer includes end of chapter questions and a discussion guide that makes it great for groups.

Did I end up learning about true 'Intercessory Prayer'? I learned that prayer is not just about what I pray or even how I pray (or for whom). If anything, my eyes had been opened to a more Spirit activated, love driven heart! Thanks Dutch!

Quotes from Intercessory Prayer by Dutch Sheets:

"What exactly is intercessory prayer?  And don't just tell me it's "standing in the gap."  Enough religious quotes and spiritual jargon.  I know the thought is taken from the Bible but what does it mean?"

"Re-Presenting Jesus Intercession can be summarized as mediating, going between, pleading for another, representing one party to another."

From inside the cover: "Pastor and teacher Dutch Sheets explains the nuts and bolts of prayer, with wisdom, gentleness and humor. This book will inspire you, give you courage to pray for the "impossible" and help you find the persistence to see your prayers to completion.  Discover your role as a prayer warrior - it can mean the difference between heaven and hell for someone you know!"

"It correctly ansers questions that are too often answered incorrectly.  This book sets the record straight." Ted Haggard

"Readers will want to pray more, and they will see more results." Bill Bright - Founder of Campus Crusade for Christ

Review by Kenneth Passno: "An exceptional resource for anyone interested in intercessory prayer. I love the writing style of Dutch Sheets as he clearly explains the inner-workings of prayer with humor, sincerity, and plenty of examples where prayer has worked. I highly recommend this book."

Review by Ronald Willis: "I was one of those that Pastor Sheets refers to when he asks the question; have you ever felt that your prayers don't count, this book will help you to see how vital your prayers really are. This book helped me to get involved in our churches Men's Prayer Group and become one of the prayer warriors for our church. Intercessory Prayer is one of the vital parts of the success of any ministry, if we are to be persistent to see whatever it is that we are praying about come to pass. I would recommend this book to anyone seeking to know more about Intercessory Prayer and how vital it is to the growth of any church or ministry."

Review by Peter A Hovis: "Intercessory Prayer has shown me just how vital my prayers are. Through this book, I have gained a better understanding of the nuts and bolts of prayer, with wisdom, gentleness, and humor. Intercessory Prayer has inspired me, given me the courage to pray for the impossible, and helped me to find the persistence to see my prayers to completion. Indeed, I have discovered my role as a prayer warrior!"
